Alastair Lumsden

Image of Alistair LumsdenAs a result of increased woodland activity on both Lowland and Highland Estates, Bowlts recruited Alastair Lumsden during 1993 to strengthen their forestry team.

On leaving Newton Rigg College in 1982, Alastair started his forestry career with the Forestry Commission, Dornoch Forest District and was chiefly engaged in upland afforestation projects within the Ben More forest area.

Following a two year spell with the Forestry Commission, an opportunity arose for Alastair to move to Inverness where he then spent eight years with a national forestry company. Although originally recruited as a harvesting/marketing manager with responsibilities to both maintain the company's existing contracts and develop new market opportunities (specifically in the north-east of Scotland), Alastair progressed to become the company's Area Manager for North of Scotland. During this time, Alastair worked closely with a number of private estates handling harvesting programmes and was a regular purchaser of Forestry Commission standing timber.

Providing a complementary balance to the reputation that Bowlts had already established as being at the forefront of native woodland conservation and establishment, the appointment has allowed Bowlts to offer clients a more complete package in managing woodlands on a multi-purpose basis within integrated rural estates.

Alastair recognises that a key part of his remit will be the continued development of the Bowlts forestry management service including the ongoing design and implementation of forestry projects for existing clients, as well as satisfying the increased consultancy workload which the forestry team is now attracting, including woodland valuations and preparation of environmental management plans. He has just completed overseeing 3,000 acres of new native woodland schemes. Currently studying for an Open University Environmental Science degree this and his recent experience builds on existing skills and means he can truly deal with all aspects of forestry from seedling to sawbench.
