Originally from a farming background in Wales, Tom left The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester in 1992 and initially started working for a private estate in Dee-side, Aberdeenshire, where he gained extensive practical experience.

A move to a tree nursery in Gloucestershire followed before Tom took a post as assistant forester in a mixed rural practice in Mid-Wales in 1994.
