HILLPHONES SYSTEM FOR WALKERS INTO ACTION
The Hillphones system allows walkers to check with estates whether stalking activities will clash with proposed walks and it has just been activated for this season.
The estates involved have a recorded message system which allows walkers to check which areas will be stalked each day and thus plan their routes to minimise any conflict. Leaflets with the relevant contact numbers are available from Tourist Information Centres, outdoor equipment shops, etc, and the scheme is publicised in mountaineering/walking magazines.
The scheme now covers a quarter of Scotland’s Munros, from Glenshiel to Braemar, Arran and Jura. The simple yet effective system is backed by funding from Scottish Natural Heritage and The Mountaineering Council for Scotland.
