NFU MUTUAL WARNS OF INCREASED RISK OF ACCIDENTS DURING WET WEATHER

Posted on

With the prospect of a wet harvest season on the cards, NFU Mutual is warning farmers to take care of themselves and their workers as they tackle what could be the most difficult harvest for many years.

A wet harvest not only puts additional pressure on machines but also adds to the strain on people, with many continuing to work when tired or when conditions are unsafe.

Their top tips to assist farmers in working more safely in the field throughout harvest season include:-

- When clearing blockages or carrying out maintenance, ensure machines are ALWAYS switched off and             parts have stopped moving

- Keep mobile phones on your person – not in your tractor or vehicle

- Put in place a system for keeping in touch with lone workers

- Resist the urge to keep going when warning devices issue an alert or gauges are in the red

- Keep a good first aid kit handy
